about

composed by Gregg Bendian (2020)

Commissioned for the 50th Anniversary of Yale Oral History of American Music

The concept for CALL UPON THE MASTERS was to create a kind of elevated conversation/rhythmic chant between two major contributors to the language of free jazz drumming: Andrew Cyrille, known for his seminal work with Cecil Taylor, and my teacher during high school years - and Milford Graves, known for his work with Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. Cyrille and Graves released the LP, Dialogue of The Drums in 1976 on their own IPS label. That album, which I cherished throughout my formative period, was the main inspiration for the enhanced call and response interactions that I have arranged here.
